Memorials of
Manchester Streets
R. W. PROCTOR
This book takes us through the history of its streets. As
the preface suggests "The work is based on the earliest map of the town
that can be considered authentic, aided by Buck's admirable south-west
Prospect, taken in 1728, when our primitive Lancashire borough was
Manchester only, and before her affairs had expounded into national or
world-wide importance." This book began life in the then "Manchester Guardian" six
years previous to the publication of this book in 1874. It tells the
story of Manchester Men and their abodes. First published as a subscription only book The
list of subscribers not being entered into this publication. It is
finished off with a number of original or rare illustrations. It should be noted that the lines in
this book were not always straight and this is reflected somewhat in the
scanning. Where possible I have manipulate the pages to straighten
the text but this as not been possible on every occasion. This does
not detract from the information contained within. Unlike the title may suggest this book is not only a history of
the older streets of Manchester but also contains a lot of information of
use to the family historian. To this end the Appendix which has been
added tells the story of some of Manchester's Worthies. A short biography of the author as been inserted at a later
date. Richard Wright PROCTOR 1816 - 1881. Scanned and converted to .PDF format this CD will work on any
machine that as Adobe Acrobat 6 or higher installed.
