The Place Names of Cumberland & Westmorland

W. J. Sedgefield, Litt.D.;

This book was published by The University of Manchester as a part of the English Series.  Taking each of the towns and villages of Cumberland and Westmorland names in alphabetical order it sets out to explain how each place came by its name.

Place name studies cause more arguments between Philologists, historians and archaeologists however the author readily admits to steering to the middle ground and because of this the controversial aspects of this subject have to some extent been avoided.

If you have ancestors from one of these two modern counties, live there or once lived there this book may give insight into how and why any given place came by the name it is now known.  In some cases it can also show how the name as over time become corrupted from its original form
